Life Insurance as a Gift for Children

I know, I know... when you read the title of this blog, many of you may have thought "There Amanda goes again... talking about life insurance." But life insurance is truly a product I believe in so hear me out!

If you've been around children, especially young children at Christmas, you have probably been witness to one of life's greatest joys. There is something incredibly special about the joy of kids at Christmas time. The excited faces and squeals they make when Santa brought them JUST what they wanted! The hours of playing without a care in the world.

But you may have also experienced the phenomenon of babies and toddlers at Christmas... Do you remember your kids or grandkids sitting on the edge of their seats to open a box or crawling to play with a bow only to toss the gift inside the box to the side and continue to play with box? Or have you ever purchased a really expensive item that you thought they would be really excited about only to find out that they are happier about the $1.10 box of crayons they received? I find this absolutely fascinating about babies and toddlers. In their mind, the joy comes from the experience and not the item itself. Wouldn't it be amazing if we could keep this mindset throughout our entire lives?

This is what makes life insurance the perfect gift for young children. When I have clients come into the office around Christmas, I often ask if their kids are going to get enough gifts for Christmas. Almost always, my question is answered with a chuckle, or an eye roll or a "They get soo much more than they need!" We are all aware that it happens. We have all seen kids receive a gift only to toss it aside 7 days later and never pick it up again. There is a lot of excess. Why then do we feel the need to continue to buy more things to put under the tree?

Instead, I believe that life insurance can be a great gift. It is a well thought out gift showing that you care about their future. The policy will lock in insurability for the recipient so you can rest easy knowing that this "to-do" item is checked off for their future. It will not clutter up your home or be tossed in the trash come January. You may not get the instant thank you, but trust me, from experience, your "child" will thank you when as an adult, they have one less expense to worry about!
